John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Right from the very start of his gospel John identifies Jesus as the divine son, the eternal son of the Father, God from God who became human and entered into our world.

John does this through the use of the titles “the word”, (Greek ‘logos’) and “God” (Greek ‘Theo's’)

Firstly John asserts that ‘In the beginning was the word” Here John is teaching us that Jesus is eternal and has always existed with the Father. Scripture reveals this in the book of Genesis 1. Where we discover the God who creates, reveals, and redeems all creation by his “Word”

Secondly, John states that “the word was with God” which affirms that Jesus is one with God yet distinct from God in an eternal Father-Son relationship.

Thirdly John teaches us that “the Word was God” asserting that the Word shares the full deity of God. Since there is only one God, in this John reveals that within God there exists a Father-Son relation that shares the one divine nature.

John concludes the prologue to his gospel in verse18,

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

Here John brings us right back to verse 1 of his prologue as he reaffirms that Lord Jesus, "The Word", the incarnate Son has made God the Father visible to us, simply because Jesus The Word is God.

Have a great day, and God bless,
