Psalm 24 is a hymn of praise to God as the creator and ruler of the world. It is divided into two parts: in the first part, the psalmist asks who may ascend the mountain of the Lord and enter his presence (verses 1-2); in the second part, the psalmist proclaims that the Lord is the king of glory and calls on the gates of the city to open for him (verses 3-10).

Verse 1: "The earth is the Lord's and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." This verse affirms that God is the creator and owner of the earth and all its inhabitants.

Verse 2: "For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters." This verse emphasizes God's power and sovereignty over the natural world, as he is able to control the seas and waters.

Verse 3: "Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place?" Here the psalmist poses the question of who is worthy to approach God and enter his presence.

Verse 4: "The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god." In this verse, the psalmist qualifies the attributes required to enter the Lord's presence: righteousness, devotion to God, and rejection of false gods.

Verse 5: "They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Saviour." Those who meet the qualifications described in verse 4 will receive God's blessings and salvation.

Verse 6: "Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, God of Jacob." This verse describes the kind of people who seek God and his presence: those who are devoted to him and call on his name.

Verse 7: "Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in." This verse calls on the gates of the city to open for the coming of the King of glory, who is identified as God.

Verse 8: "Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle." The psalmist asks who the King of glory is and answers that he is the Lord, who is powerful and victorious in battle.

Verse 9: "Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in." This verse repeats the call for the gates to open for the coming of the King of glory.

Verse 10: "Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty—he is the King of glory." The psalmist again asks who the King of glory is and answers that he is the Lord Almighty.

To summarise, Psalm 24 is a hymn of praise to God as the creator and ruler of the world, emphasising his power and sovereignty, and inviting those who are pure and righteous to approach him. The psalm also proclaims that the Lord is the king of glory and calls on the gates of the city to open for him.
